{"id":444,"date":"2009-06-09T07:12:05","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T15:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sabusense.com\/?p=444"},"modified":"2009-06-09T10:30:26","modified_gmt":"2009-06-09T18:30:26","slug":"system-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sabusense.com\/?p=444","title":{"rendered":"System Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabusense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/pushing-eleph002sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-448\" title=\"pushing-eleph002sm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sabusense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/pushing-eleph002sm.jpg\" alt=\"pushing-eleph002sm\" width=\"273\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a>If you\u2019re a Superintendent, CEO, or other system leader,\u00a0 <em>Sabu<\/em> feels your pain.<\/p>\n<p>Why\u00a0 does &#8220;leading&#8221; a total system have to be so hard?<\/p>\n<p>For a different way of thinking about it see &#8220;Kids, horses, teachers, &#8230;and other <em>living things<\/em>&#8221; at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabusense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/montyroberts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Monty Roberts and Natural Learning<\/a>.<br \/>\nYou may be familiar with Monty Roberts because of his revolutionary work with horses, but today he spends much his time doing teacher and leadership training for schools, and management training for business and industry.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly because of the novel and movie by the name, many people refer to him as a &#8220;<em>horse whisperer<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 But note that the actual title of this book refers to a <em>Horse LISTENER<\/em> &#8212; &#8220;The Man Who Listens to Horses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some things to consider about the relevance of his way-of-thinking to your work :<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The difference between &#8220;talking&#8221; and &#8220;listening&#8221;\u00a0 is the real power of what Roberts&#8217; work means for all of us who attempt to influence behaviors of living <em>systems<\/em>.\u00a0 How much of teaching and leading is &#8220;talking&#8221; and how much is &#8220;listening?&#8221;\u00a0 Think of the teachers who most influenced you.\u00a0 Was it the content they delivered or what they seemed to understand about you?\u00a0 And how are the two &#8220;teaching\/leading skills&#8221; connected?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Note that the key to Roberts&#8217; success as a &#8220;teacher&#8221; was that first he listened and found out what the horses could tell him about <em>how they learned<\/em>.\u00a0 Roberts\u2019 knew he was <em>always<\/em> dealing with a &#8220;whole horse&#8221; &#8212; that had a <em>mind of its own<\/em>.\u00a0 And because he had figured out its learning process, he knew &#8220;<em>what it wanted<\/em>&#8220;or needed.<\/p>\n<p>By going with the flow of the process already pre-wired in the brain he proved that changed behaviors can be effective, sustainable, and accomplished in far less time (from three-months down to 30 minutes) than any of the traditional way\u2019s people have used to teach [or &#8220;break&#8221;] horses.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How does his <em>Join-up<\/em> process \u2013(first <em>engage<\/em>, and establish <em>trust<\/em>; then use that trust to interact; and out of this <em>interaction<\/em> begin to develop an intrinsically-driven relationship that is the support of all &#8220;work&#8221; that may follow) &#8212; compare to what you know about effective teaching, coaching and leading?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How does his &#8220;simple&#8221; logic of starting with the <em>learner you have<\/em> (and its already embedded learning structure), reinforcing it, and using that capacity to develop what <em>you don&#8217;t have<\/em> relate to the beliefs and strategies underlying other effective approaches to individual and organizational improvement?<\/p>\n<p>For instance, what seems to be similar about &#8220;<em>developmentally-appropriate education<\/em>&#8221; for children,\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Appreciative Inquiry<\/em>&#8221; for organizations,&#8221;<em> <\/em>and<em> Assets-based Community Development?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How does this approach to intrinsically-driven change relate to the &#8220;change&#8221;\u00a0 goal of <em>continual improvement<\/em>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re a Superintendent, CEO, or other system leader,\u00a0 Sabu feels your pain.
