Making Sense of this Site
Sense-making isn’t always easy. Sometimes it seems more like a puzzle.
And in life, as on the game board, there often appear to be two general kinds of puzzles.
- Some are like jig-saws where we start with the Big Picture already on the cover of the box. We have the solution, and our challenge then is to test through trial and error to find out how the pieces fit it.
- Connect-the-dots puzzles are the other type. Here we start with seemingly random “dots” and seek moments of insight that enable us to connect them until the shape of the “big picture” begins to emerge and give meaning to initial randomness.
Because in our education system today we seem overloaded with “dots” that don’t seem to connect into a “big picture” that makes holistic sense, the views presented on this site are a product of both types of puzzle-solving operations.
They are framed by a different Big Picture that offers a coherent logic model for better understanding how the parts fit, and are supported by fifteen years of dot-connecting systemic experiences of a large US school system as it simultaneously addressed the learning needs of its students and staff.
